Fuel Discount Loyalty Programs revisited

In the September-October 2005 issue of Australian Convenience Store News, in-house market guru presciently wrote, "It makes you wonder whether 10 cpl is where things are headed." It may have only been for the pre-Christmas silly season but 10 cpl was the fuel price discount offer of the major supermarkets as this issue went to press. Although loyalty programs are starting to look beyond fuel, the fuel price discount is still the reward of choice.

In 2005 there were four independent fuel discount loyalty programs. In 2008 there are still four — but not the same four. beepp went bust, and the word is that some service stations that had redeemed the discount cards had not been paid! There is always risk, but don't let this put you off, because fuel discount loyalty programs are 'the must have' of retailing - all retailing.

Easyfuel

Easyfuel has grown to 800 retail businesses and 200 service stations nationally. It is still expanding, having recently secured the rights to provide the fuel discount loyalty program for Tasmanian Independent Retailers (50 independent Festival IGA and Value Plus supermarkets). Although the program still operates in 'hubs' (local business networks) experience has shown that the number of merchants needed to make the program viable varies by location.

"The program can work with one supermarket and one service station," said Paul Tregloan, National Sales Manager, Easyfuel.

Easyfuel is building its loyalty program around a 'smart' card. Customers present the card when they make purchases and the discount is stored in the card's memory. To redeem the discounts, the card is scanned at participating fuel outlets. Customers can accumulate discounts but there is a fill limit of 50 litres. The average redemption is 20 cpl, and the average fill is 40 litres — higher than the average fill across the industry.

"One customer in Tasmania managed a 97 cents discount by spending $120 at a Prospect IGA store," said Paul Tregloan. "The smart card technology allows retailers to offer large discounts on specific items."

With the Easyfuel program, service stations can participate as retailers, and the program can be tailored to focus on items that generate the highest gross profit. By targeting specific items, there can be shelf-talkers throughout the store reminding customers of the fuel discount.
